How should we prepare for a road trip?

  • Mobile device: make sure you have chargers that will work in the car as well as in a wall.

  • Car ready: it might be a good idea to get an oil change if it’s almost due; plus, have the shop check all lights, fluid levels, tire pressure and everything.

  • Spare ready: it’s a good idea to check the spare tire to make sure it’s in good shape.

  • Trunk ready: be ready for possible issues by packing bottled water, a fire extinguisher, first aid kit and emergency road flares.

What apps are good to use on a road trip?

Obviously, you will need your favorite map and weather apps. These are our suggestions for apps that can help you make the Road Trip a success.

  • Roadtrippers (free) to plan your route and find the amazing stop on the way. Get our Midwest Road Trip online.

  • Roadside America ($2.99) to find the cool and quirky sites along the route

  • Gas Buddy (free) to find the lowest prices along the way

Road Trip Games

What games can we play on a road trip?

Our list includes downloadable prints (click the image to get the games) but nothing to buy. Don’t forget the classic crayons and coloring books.

  • License plate map game: Probably one of the oldest road trip games, searching for license plates from all of the continental U.S. is a perfect game for a long road trip. Give extra points for any outside the continental U.S.

  • Car Bingo

  • Tic Tac Toe

  • Travel Bingo

  • Spelling Bee

  • Name That Tune: using your own playlist or with a car radio that scans stations with a “seek” button.

  • Conversation starters (download)

  • Alphabet: look for things inside the car, outside the car or business names starting with the letter A all the way to Z.

  • 20 Questions: You’ve probably played it before, but just to refresh your memory: one player thinks of a person, place, or thing. The others take turns asking yes-or-no questions; after each question, they get a guess about what/where/who it is. If they don’t solve it after 20 questions, they lose.
