Free Walking Tour Showcasing North Omaha

Nebraska Tour Company, crafting custom experiences which connect people to the local story of their community, today announced that their North Omaha District History Walking Tour will have free reservations on July 11, 2020. Led by community leader and celebrated local personality Preston Love, Jr., participants will hear Love recount one-of-a-kind stories of times past while also learning about the impact the district has now in the present and the important role it will contInue to play in the future by shaping the city as a whole.

North Omaha has long been a center for development. In 1898 it served as the stage for the Trans-Mississippi Exposition, attracting more than a million visitors. Many notable leaders have emerged from the neighborhood, like Mildred Brown, who, in 1938, co-founded the Omaha Star, an African American newspaper still in circulation today, and it is also the birthplace of Malcolm Little who took his place in history as Malcolm X.

Nebraska Tour Company has offered their North Omaha History Tour since 2018 and in the spring of 2019, partnered with Preston Love Jr. to lead the popular tour. Love shares stories of the life he’s lived along the historic streets of North Omaha and also recounts tales of his father, a renowned jazz musician. The neighborhood has a reputation of being a vibrant jazz culture and was, at one point, the 3rd most popular ‘jazz city’ in the US having hosted performances by a number of music legends like the Nat King Cole Trio, Dinah Washington, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, and Dizzy Gillespie. The specialty tour highlights the beauty and history of this rich legacy via North 24th Street, also known as “The Street of Dreams” and affectionately named “The Deuce” and it still serves as a beacon for the arts. Love, himself, is a former football star and resident who grew up in the community. His expert and insider knowledge of the area shed light on a culture that continues to evolve and shape the future.

"It's an important time to give local residents the opportunity to hear the first hand stories of jazz greatness, community spirit and historic issues in the North Omaha district." said Alan Rust, CEO, Nebraska Tour Company. "It's always been our company mission to share local stories of our community and really highlight their importance both past, present and future."

Nebraska Tour Company has been showing Omaha off since 2017 when Rust started the company with an eye to feature local artisans, restaurants and other only- known-to-locals haunts. The company works exclusively with Omaha-owned and based businesses hoping to connect people to local stories of the community.

"Our team looks forward to supporting the rich tapestry that is the 24th & Lake business district in North Omaha as it continues its revitalization." adds Rust.

The one hour tour covers approximately 0.7 miles. Tour-goers will also have a chance to view historic photos from the past via their own mobile device. Though the first tour is full, there will be a the second tour at 2:00 pm. This tour is also available on our regular monthly schedule by visiting the North Omaha Tour page.
