Omaha is a surprising place with pivotal history, fun things to do, live music and an amazing foodie scene. These are only 7 of the top things in the city along with my recommendation for the thing you have find at each attraction.
1. Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium
Our zoo is often rated #1 in America. It contains the world's largest indoor desert and nocturnal exhibits along with one of North America's largest indoor rainforests. Originally called Riverview Park the zoo started in 1895 in the same location.
>>Have to find: the penguin exhibit has been a favorite for decades.
2. Omaha RiverFront
The RiverFront (openings beginning Memorial Day 2022) include 3 parks over 90 acres. The Gene Leahy Mall is a downtown entertainment and activity center including water features and cafes. Our Heartland of America Park features a lake centered by a 320-ft water jet fountain plus a skate ribbon and botanical garden. Along the river is Lewis & Clark Landing with playgrounds and sports courts plus the Kiewit Luminarium Science Center.
>>Have to find: the famous slides have been in the park since the 1970s.
3. Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge
This sculptural bring is a 3,000-foot long walkway stretches across the Missouri River, giving pedestrians a spectacular view of Omaha’s skyline. It connects more than 150 miles of scenic trails in both Iowa and Nebraska.
>>Have to find: the state line where you can stand in both Iowa and Nebraska at the same time; it called Bobbing.
This National Historic landmark made the change from warehouses to a lively shopping, gallery, dining and nightlife destination way back in the 1970s. Stroll along the cobblestone streets and discover the classics and new favorites.
>>Have to find: the Passageway along Howard Street is possibly the most photographed location in the state.
5. FNBO Spirit of Nebraska's Wilderness and Pioneer Courage Park
This park at Capitol & 14th Street is a tribute to the our past as the Gateway to the West this is the largest installation of bronze and stainless steel work of art in the United States and one of the two or three largest in the world.
>>Have to find: the running buffalo as the run along 15th street to the rest of the park at 16th & Dodge Street
6. Joslyn Art Museum
The art deco masterpiece opened in 1931 at the initiative of Sarah Joslyn in memory of her husband, George. The exterior is constructed of Georgia Pink marble, with 38 different marbles from all over the world in the interior.
>>Have to find: the Rembrandt painting which is a keystone of the western art on display.
7. Durham Museum
This National Historic Landmark of Omaha's beautiful Art Deco Union Station. The main floor preserved as the train station where thousands entered Omaha in days past. The lower level contains many historic exhibits along with a fully restored steam train and streetcar.
>>Have to find: the Old Fashioned Soda Fountain to enjoy a historic ice cream treat.
